Mini Interview - Clemens Zeidler

9_64
Clemens Zeidler recently won our October Thank You Award. Like all winners, we asked him a few questions with regards to his activity in the Haiku community:

Q1: How old are you and what do you do to pay the bills?

I'm 30 years old and I got a scholarship at the University of Auckland.

Q2: In your Thank You Award nomination, it said you: "improved and integrated Stack & Tile as a regulator decorator." How difficult (or easy) was it to accomplish this task?

First I had to understand what is needed to separate Stack & Tile from the app server code and how to make it modular. Introducing stuff in an existing unknown system is always a difficult thing. You have to understand the code and modifications should not break existing stuff. For example, I had to understand when to hold a write and when to hold a read lock in the app server. Extending own code is always much easier.

Stack & Tile needs to react on various user interactions so it was quite obvious to call some hook function from within the app server to notify some extern classes about this events. After establishing this listener interface it was a very easy task to put everything in an add-on. I just had to put the Stack & Tile class into the add-on and register it as a listener when loading the add-on. This came for free because Stack & Tile was already completely separated from the rest of the app server code at this point.

Q3: What would you love to have that would make working on Haiku easier?

Proper IMAP email support and a fast Tracker which can display big directories in a reasonable time. Furthermore, handle multiple monitor e.g. a beamer would be a good feature especially at the uni where you have to give a talk form time to time. A pdf translator or viewer with a updated pdf engine is also on my wish list. Otherwise, I think haiku is in a pretty good shape and we should release R1 as fast as possible to gather new developers. At least I can't find a point where BeOS R5 was better than Haiku is now.

Q4: What interesting book, band, TV show etc. would you like to recommend?

I always enjoy to read a book where I don't exactly know what it is about. Got some good book from hostels: leave an old book and get a new one... I can recommend all music which is fast, simple and fun ;-)
