Haiku Boot Menu Fix for Macs

Haiku isn't really very well supported on Macs. There was one bug in particular that prevented some Haiku users from using Haiku on their Macs (at least to some degree). Ticket #2654 described how the keyboard would be unavailable for Intel Mac users, so that they couldn't even select safe mode options to try to boot Haiku. As of r41117, this has been fixed so that Haiku's advanced boot menu options can be accessed (it took two years to commit this working patch...)!

Being the curious guy I am, and having a MacBook (2Ghz, '2,1') affected by this bug, I tried a recent Haiku revision. I booted the system under Haiku, which just restarted the whole system. So, to see what was going on, I tried enabling the on screen debug output (because now I can)... However, the keyboard (and touchpad) doesn't work to skip the pages of the debug output (or in the OS itself, once you have it booted).

By some trial & error, I've found this combination works, to boot Haiku.

  1. Press space when Haiku's booting to get into the Boot Menu Options.
  2. Enable Fail Safe Video
  3. Disable ACPI

There you'll boot to the prompt to install Haiku or run the LiveCD. The only problem is the internal touchpad and mouse don't work! If you had an external USB mouse plugged in, it won't work either. But, if you unplug, and plug an external mouse in again, it will (I didn't try an external USB keyboard). I then tried installing from the installer, but it crashed. Afterwards I ran the Live Desktop and installed Haiku manually.

  • wired and wireless networking works
  • touchpad and keyboard don't work once the OS is booted Update! As of r41539, the keyboard & Touchpad work now!
  • graphics only in VESA mode
  • sound card detected, doesn't work.
