So far things are going rather well. Aside from some lib hell here and there most of the application testing is going rather well. Surprisingly a large number of programs at Haikuware currently work correctly. Some need repacking, and or need to include the required librarys as part of the install.

I will work with everyone who has a application posted here to resolved these issues in a timely manner. If someone has a question I have a direct line with one of the devs if something is a bit unclear.

So lets make Haiku the best open source OS on the planet, lets make stuff just work !

So lets cover some basic tennets behind what I am doing here.

I am auditing the applications on Haikuware and taking stock in what works and what does not. Sadly I think a few BeOS apps may no longer work correctly.

I am also testing currently functional software for compliance with regards to data integrity and directory setup. I am also making sure dependancys are properly included.

Each application is responsable for its required files. We cannot count on a user to understand that he she needs bundle B to make application A work. I am going to work on getting a certification from the devs for the sdlgcc4 librarys and a few others. This way it can be packed with each game to resolve functionality conflicts.

I am a bit unsure of what to do with Qt at the moment and I have emailed the devs at the QT project. Hopefully getting that figured out would be massively beneficial.

I will be busy testing and updating this blog over the next few weeks preparing for Alpha3.

It seems some of the emulators on Haikuware don't work well. A straight port of mednafen could work as a replacement for most of them, and it only really relies on SDL. If you could compile it for Haiku, it would be really appreciated. It should be compilable on any system that has SDL, but my compiling skills are nothing to brag about so I've failed to do it myself.

I am not a terrifically skilled with c/c++ and or sdl. I could attempt it, but I doubt I have the time. I will be back after later with more testing results.

There is the bounty option however for mednafen.

There was a failed attempt to compile a list of app that were not working "out of the box" last year:

I have tested around 200 apps so far. I will be forwarding a complete list in the next few days.

awesome! hopefully it can be released in conjunction with A3. If you'd like to submit a news item/write-up here about your experiences, let me know! I'm pretty sure OSNews would be interested in a detailed write-up with the state of applications on Haiku and BeOS compatibility.

I'll get there eventually Karl.
