Yes...a tip: developers could have a look at
dev.haiku-os.org/browser/haiku/trunk/data/artwork/icons
and use material from that page. In most cases, a suitable icon is already there. Otherwise it's just a matter of shape selecting/shrinking/appending (in Icon-O-Matic), as long as you don't go any further than any of those three adaptations(!). I guess the icons over there are under MIT license (if any). Just always use them with your good taste and not in a commercial application, and things will probably be fine...or maybe check first.

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerkarl 2009-11-17 11:36
A better link, to visualize the artwork may be here: dev.hug-nordic.org/haikuart/icons.php

;-)

Hmm, never seen it before..!
Indeed a useful link, thanks Karl.

0 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managerkarl 2009-11-17 15:24
no prob, it doesn't yet contain all the icons though I believe.

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerdeniseweird 2009-11-17 16:22
Looks awesome. When networking starts working again (Stopped working for me somewhere around the Alpha 1 release) I'll try it. As mentioned, using Haiku icons would be better IMO. Also, you could add a search function (Unless you already did). Otherwise, great work! Thanks!

0 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerstreakx 2009-11-18 05:48
Are those icons there ->
http://dev.hug-nordic.org/haikuart/icons.php#
are downloadable in PNG format? I cant download it using BonEcho. Dunno why..

+2 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managerdeniseweird 2009-11-18 07:56
I just tried, and I'm not able to do it through the links provided.. It may be an issue with the site. I'm using Firefox 3.5.5 (Windows).

+2 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managerkarl 2009-11-18 08:57
Ya downloading doesn't work for some reason, but you can drag the icons from the browser window to your desktop (at least in OS X with FireFox). They are in PNG format. I made this package a while ago, but it's not up to date: www.haikuware.com/directory/view-details/system-files/icons/haiku-icons

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerstreakx 2009-11-18 09:16
Anyway checked it and.. they're will not fit good into synthetic icon set [ missing few icons , and i dont want to put a "haiku files icons" into toolbar. If this icon set became more mature [ more icons to choose from ] i'll definitelly add those in synthetic..

btw. I can add beos icons if some of you have a bigger library of beos icons converted to PNG.

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package ManagerMeanwhile 2009-11-18 10:22
It's possible to download the largest version of each icon in the left column. Just right click on it and choose 'save image as' in Firefox.

+2 # DocumentsLelldorin 2009-11-23 11:07
Please dont install anything on the Desktop, for the documentations of apps we need a fixed folder in the system like /boot/documentation/appname/

Lelldorin , is this "/boot/documentation/" folder approved by haikuteam?

i think the haiku team have no concept for something like this at the moment.

ok, new version [0.0.16] uploaded. This ver should be quite usable at the moment for many HaikuOS users.

... and gnash on the repos...

Gnash is ready to download/install via Synthetic [ with all dependences ]. It resides in libraries/unofficial gcc4 category.

+2 # RE: RE: RE: Synthetic Package ManagerAdek336 2009-12-05 15:21
You can put it into media/video. Or www/plugins like gentoo portage does, but I'm not keen on that one. Cool thing that Syntethic installs also dependencies from the Optional Packages pool :) Don't give the whole boost library set as dependency - use only Boost.Thread and Boost.Date_time, they weight a lot less. Also, gnash doesn't need libagg at runtime. And when installing to a gcc4 build BeZilla, let Syntethic install the gcc4 plugin instead of the gcc2 one.

+3 # RE: RE: RE: RE: Synthetic Package ManagerAdek336 2009-12-10 18:02
Streak, Gnash is still in the "Libraries" category, you have to correct this.

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerstreakx 2009-11-30 06:41
As promised v0.3.0 uploaded :)

btw. multioption [ user's lazy ass mode :) ] will not be implemented , because of concepts/limitations i made during Synthetic project.

Gnash will be in repo soon. I need to test it firsty.

and.. uninstalling mode. Im thinking about few concepts how it should be done. basic implementation should be available very soon.

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerdeniseweird 2009-11-30 12:25
Do you only package software? Or do you compile some software too?

I would like to see GCC4 libraries added, and if you can, mednafen.

I requested a search option before, but you didn't reply so I thought I'd bring it up again. It's really, really handy!

Viewing packages by name could also help a lot.

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerstreakx 2009-11-30 12:40
Search option will be available but not soon..

I'm not compiling anything new. Just testing all packs from beos on haiku and if they're working im adding them to repos.

I will add GCC4 libs soon.

+1 # RE: RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managerclasqm 2009-12-10 01:19
If you right-click on a file , select Addons, then FileType, you get a dialog with an icon in the top right corner. You do this for both the file containing the icon file and the application you want to add the icon to. You now have two FileType windows open. Pick up the icon from the one and drag it over to the other. drop the icon on the (empty?) icon box. Close the FileType windows and you're good to go.

BeOS icons, which most of us are still using, exist only as attributes. Haiku is supposed to have a special SVG icon format, but the tools for it are not openly available yet AFAIK.

If you have a PNG you want to use, copy it to a BFS volume, use one of the Thumbnail apps available here to create an icon attribute, then follow the above procedure.

http://www.birdhouse.org/beos/byte/19-tweakers/ (scroll down to icon tweaks))

another tips, if you dont mind:
- theres no screenshot for the "synthetic Package Manager" ;) nice feature and you dont use it for your app
- i agree about more native icons
- can you make windows resizible by draging its right down corner, plz?
- basic search would be very nice feature

by the way,it seems i dont have Uninstaller ans Shortcuts apps.
Can you add them in Synthetic, plz?

nice program. congratulations.

a small remark, when one click on a description of a package, then later on a new group on the left side, the description remains there (in righ bottom window)

a small feature request, option to retain the downloaded packages in the temp folder (now deleted after install, I think)

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerlukoie 2010-05-17 11:44
please, update screenshot of the program, and also add ver0.4 into list in synthetic itself! i wanted to update the program from itself, but there's still old version.
and by the way - why cant you make it opensource in some SVN?
on my fresh alpha2 it says "missing librarries: libncurses.so"!

+2 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package ManagerPerE 2010-05-17 12:00

I don't know how many times I read that libncurses is missing from x y and z application. So many damn programs use it... This is Haiku's fault. Include the most popular libraries in the operating system already, gah.

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerlukoie 2010-05-17 14:23
well, on th eother hand its not a big deal to add this lib
you go to Syhetic, Libraries\Officeial GCC2\nCurses library, thats all.
well...yes, you need to have previous Synthetic version
with the application, if you know its not in the default haiku installation. its for streakx!
and i thing Senryu does have all needed libs, and R1 will have as well!

llelectronics - do you want to give Streakx some specific, constructive recommendations on improving the interface? Streakx, are you interested in hearing comments on the interface?

+2 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerllelectronics 2010-06-15 10:02
I would rewrite the interface to include a better icon view options of categories.
Pretty much the same as the software center in ubuntu for example.
The icons in the toolbar need rework. They aren't very clear don't fit to the haiku system icons. (just by looking at the uninstall button I would never know that this button is for uninstallation).
I would include screenshots into the description area (if screenshot is avaiable) and also an installation button in the description. The list of software on the left can stay the same as it is right now.
If I can get my hands on the source I can do a first prototype or mockup

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Managersparklewind 2010-07-12 18:54
I have two concerns:

Does it have to be so strict with categories for the user? You have to do several clicks before the package manager shows anything. Why not show every package when no category is selected, and then let the user choose if he or she wants to be more specific? A global filtering would go well with this too.

Could users get more choice in how big the window should be? A maximize button in the titlebar, and a little resize corner, would make things more convenient.

With that said, awesome app! Thanks a lot for working on this.

Quoting sparklewind:

From SPM v0.6.1 all packages from subcategories will be visible in main category aswell..

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Managerllelectronics 2010-07-13 11:05
Resizing should be no problem if we set the minimum size of the window correctly.

The First Startup screen should show a list of the most popular apps in the repo. (As the repo status is unclear right know, this has to wait :P)
A global search would be nice. Showing only categories that are full with apps would be the next logical step also.

+1 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managersparklewind 2010-07-13 18:03
So you know what size users will want in every situation? I often change the size of a window in relation to other windows, or how much I need to see at the time.

Why should it show the most popular apps? Isn't that also a category?

+1 # RE: RE: RE: Synthetic Package Managerllelectronics 2010-07-14 10:07
Its technical limitation and decision. It makes no sense to resize the window so much that widgets aren't visible.

"Most Popular" isn't a category right now but it should be one. On the first screen of the app I would show the most popular apps as a recommendetation only, so not as list view as we have right now but a simple iconic view.

Here a small mockup :

I have just installed Haiku Alpha 2 and Synthetic. When I try to run Synthetic I get the following error:

Could not open "synthetic_v0.6.8" (Missing symbol: _ZN11BArchivable13AllUnarchivedEPK8BMessage).

What's the solution?

Best regards,

This build requires GCC4 or GCC4H to work. Soon i'll release a GCC2/GCC2H version aswell..

Uff, finally i've added these +180 articles / books [freeware]/ reviews / tutorials / ezines to Manuals_and_eBooks category in SPM Pro.

Looks good. Maybe Scottmc could do the unthinkable. Put some banner add's on the top of the page to raise money for the server. looking at the site traffic it could put a large chyunk of $$$ towards it.

Other ideas include.

Membership for premum applications. With say a $5 yearly fee. Not for the software but acess to the database.

Or app liscensing for $5 a year or something.

You guys need something for your efforts. There is honor and dignity in labor and knowledge and they shouldn't always be given so freely as if they had no value at all.

the other though I have is a gift card type deal. Cretae Paypal account type payment of $20 and charge for the application $1 $5 per application etc etc etc . Pay the devlopers and covers the overhead here. seem very reasonable to charge for work.

when I get a few dollars free on the CC I will be getting a copy of package pro.

Just a though.

What kind of operations, Andrewzx1?

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Manager Proandrewzx1 2010-10-05 15:46
Basic operations of SPO. I am not entirely on what it does and how it works. What problem does it solve and how does it solve the problem.

I should add that I do not come from LinuxLand so the idea of package management is not something I am familiar with.

How long has ZuMi been making these toolbar icons?

I enjoyed watching his standard icons show up on his webpage earlier in the year when I had time to follow his progress . Very pleasantly surprised by his development since then.

0 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Manager Pro Freestreakx 2011-03-21 08:22
Sorry, No. I completely lost interest in haiku-os, since 5 months, when my three! machines stopped to work on newest nightlies.

Im waiting for haiku v1.0 , and then i'll jump on haiku-os boat with new stuff [A lot of QT apps made by me.] Until then all YAB/QT coding for Haiku are officially frozen.

Would you upload "to haikuware" what you have compiled so far ? would be helpful to the community.

26 oct 2011 Synthetic Package Manager Files Repo is shutting down forever. I have no time to update the repo, and i need some free space on server so i decided to wipe everything out since there is no big interest in Synthetic Package Manager

Not fine to hear, i like your application, and i dont had the time to take a look the advances iso file creator :-(.

How does you mean that there is no interest on your app? Can you see how many downloads?

+1 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Manager Pro Freekvdman 2011-10-26 11:35
almost 3000 downloads, no interest?

+1 # RE: RE: RE: Synthetic Package Manager Pro Freestreakx 2011-10-26 19:15
I mean "interest" in maintain packages for SPM and keep everything going. There was a minor movement on spm server, but it was very-very minimal,

Repo is rather big - about 3000 files and i think more than 2GB size [im still checking it] so it will not fit in small server :/

0 # RE: RE: Synthetic Package Manager Pro Freemichaelvoliveira 2011-10-26 14:54
So, release the sources! :D

+1 # RE: Synthetic Package Manager Pro FreeSeanCollins 2011-10-26 11:30
Please forward the repo to me Karl etc, I will host it on a small server I have of Karl may be willing to host it here on Haikuware.

Sean , PM me Your email, and please ask Karl, what he thinks. I'll download repo to my local hdd [files in repo -> about 4,4GB big], and then we see..

In the meantime i need to wipe out server.
