Sorry about the delay on this. I said on the Haiku forums I'd put it up quite a while ago.

Bochs x86 Emulator 2.4.5
Build from CVS snapshot, on April 25, 2010
========================================================================
------------------------------
Bochs Configuration: Main Menu
------------------------------

This is the Bochs Configuration Interface, where you can describe the
machine that you want to simulate. Bochs has already searched for a
configuration file (typically called bochsrc.txt) and loaded it if it
could be found. When you are satisfied with the configuration, go
ahead and start the simulation.

You can also start bochs with the -q option to skip these menus.

1. Restore factory default configuration
2. Read options from...
3. Edit options
4. Save options to...
5. Restore the Bochs state from...
6. Begin simulation
7. Quit now

The only thin I can recommend now is checking that the host and guest memory settings are right. Did this happen immediately with the default example settings?

0 # RE: RE: can't get it to load?khallebal2 2011-01-03 04:59
yes this happened with the default settings.

0 # RE: RE: RE: can't get it to load?stellarpower 2011-01-03 15:09
If you open .bochsrc, I've provided some annotations to help you set the program up. Bochs doesn't take arguments on startup, it loads them from the configuration. Some of the default values are only really examples.

0 # RE: can't get it to load?thatguy 2011-01-26 23:59
Select 4, save options to.

Now pick a crazy file name like

windowsxpkillaz.

It should show up in your home folder somewhere.

Now open that home folder with style edit.

Look at the memory allocations. usually 32 and 32

Set them for something reasonable like 256 256

you always want a little more host memory then emulation memory, if it touch the top of the memory allocation it crashs.

Took alot of googling to figure this out. I will work up a pictorial on how to do all this soon.

I will post screenshots of windowsXp running inside of haiku on bochs " if it doesn't crash alot"

:D

0 # RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5thatguy 2011-01-01 23:23
So how does it work, no manual in the folder and none of the self identified executables start up and run.

0 # RE: RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5stellarpower 2011-01-02 12:54
The manual is on the bochs page, I forgot about that, so I might add it to the package in the future. http://bochs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/topper.pl?name=New+Bochs+Documentation&url=http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/index.html

Bochs needs options to be given to it from .bochsrc. I've added some comments to it regarding the basic functions.

looks like a job for SteakX. all apps need a easy to use gui, assume everyone is a dumbass.

0 # RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5stellarpower 2011-01-03 15:10
There is a QT GUI here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bochsgui/

I assume there are more available somewhere.

Any screenshots to show it in action with a working OS? Someone please upload two pictures for the rest of us to see.

0 # RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5thatguy 2011-01-25 22:58
I've been tweaking on this for around 2 weeks now here and there, it still won't run, no matter how carefully I set it up it refuse to run.

quiet simply, it just won't run. If I fix one error it just errors out somewhere else.

Its buggy and setting this thing up is more then a little bit confusing to say the least. the documentation is massively obscured.

Mostly the question is, where is the boot setup ? how do you get it to work ? you can't set file paths correctly.

How about a sample setup that we can install something like windowxXp into ?

0 # RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5thatguy 2011-01-26 12:49
I got it working, How do I add a screenshot ???

only the person that added the software listing can add images (and the admins).. you could add it here in the comments though (beside the crossed out abc).

this is great news thatguy
can't wait to see how you got it working, thanks for sharing.

0 # RE: Haiku Bochs 2.4.5thatguy 2011-01-27 04:01
I've got alot of performance tweaking to do to make this useable.

its a mess. but it does run.

I will revise the readme file and post it here along with a sample config and if you have a win98 liscesne I could share a private torrent of the Hd image

if you get qemu working please let me know how you did it, to me it looks like the build needs updating.

Win98 on Haiku, Awesome. Any idea what the most recent supported version of Windows is? Win2000? WinXP???

the emulation overhead is to heavy to even windows 98 on my monster 3.6ghz 6 core machine. I wouldn't even attempt windoxp " even though the installer does run"

we really need virtual box, its way more efficient.

0 # RE: RE: cool!andrewzx1 2011-01-28 10:25
Too bad about the overhead. In your opinion, how disk intensive is Bochs? Is that a big part of the overhead?

No its the emulation thats problematic. just idling the windows 98 desktop uses 95% of one of the cores and becuase bochs is not multithreaded it clogs up one core.

same problems with MESA renderer.

I'm currently learning to write programs for Haiku. Once I have a decent knowledge, I'll try and make a GUI setup thing.

its a nice toy and for alot of things it certainly could be fun, like running old OS's for some low power setups like 133mhz ppc, should be rather functional there.

for anything serious like winxp or win vista. It simply won't do.

maybe on a slightly more throughput focused kernel like linux the performance might improve a tad, but I doubt it'll help.
