Bochs x86 Emulator 2.4.5
Build from CVS snapshot, on April 25, 2010
========================================================================
------------------------------
Bochs Configuration: Main Menu
------------------------------
This is the Bochs Configuration Interface, where you can describe the
machine that you want to simulate. Bochs has already searched for a
configuration file (typically called bochsrc.txt) and loaded it if it
could be found. When you are satisfied with the configuration, go
ahead and start the simulation.
You can also start bochs with the -q option to skip these menus.
1. Restore factory default configuration
2. Read options from...
3. Edit options
4. Save options to...
5. Restore the Bochs state from...
6. Begin simulation
7. Quit now

Now pick a crazy file name like
windowsxpkillaz.
It should show up in your home folder somewhere.
Now open that home folder with style edit.
Look at the memory allocations. usually 32 and 32
Set them for something reasonable like 256 256
you always want a little more host memory then emulation memory, if it touch the top of the memory allocation it crashs.
Took alot of googling to figure this out. I will work up a pictorial on how to do all this soon.
I will post screenshots of windowsXp running inside of haiku on bochs " if it doesn't crash alot"
Bochs needs options to be given to it from .bochsrc. I've added some comments to it regarding the basic functions.
I assume there are more available somewhere.
has it been compiled for qt 4.8 available for haiku ?

quiet simply, it just won't run. If I fix one error it just errors out somewhere else.
Its buggy and setting this thing up is more then a little bit confusing to say the least. the documentation is massively obscured.
Mostly the question is, where is the boot setup ? how do you get it to work ? you can't set file paths correctly.
How about a sample setup that we can install something like windowxXp into ?
can't wait to see how you got it working, thanks for sharing.
its a mess. but it does run.
I will revise the readme file and post it here along with a sample config and if you have a win98 liscesne I could share a private torrent of the Hd image
Screen shots
cheers
if you get qemu working please let me know how you did it, to me it looks like the build needs updating.
the emulation overhead is to heavy to even windows 98 on my monster 3.6ghz 6 core machine. I wouldn't even attempt windoxp " even though the installer does run"
we really need virtual box, its way more efficient.
No its the emulation thats problematic. just idling the windows 98 desktop uses 95% of one of the cores and becuase bochs is not multithreaded it clogs up one core.
same problems with MESA renderer.
its a nice toy and for alot of things it certainly could be fun, like running old OS's for some low power setups like 133mhz ppc, should be rather functional there.
for anything serious like winxp or win vista. It simply won't do.
maybe on a slightly more throughput focused kernel like linux the performance might improve a tad, but I doubt it'll help.
