About Becasso:

The first commercial paint/image editing application for the BeOS, featuring layers, alpha channel, orthogonal toolset, powerful selection handling, RGB and HSV color editors, add-on architecture with filters, transformers and generators (API and example code for writing your own is included). Since the BeBits e-store has closed, we now use Kagi for registration handling.

Note that this is a free upgrade for existing Becasso 1.5 users. Just download and install the package; when first launched, it should detect the presence of 1.5 and generate a Keyfile. If your SoftwareValet database has become corrupt or something else goes wrong, contact us for a Keyfile.

  • Better color selector by using new HSV algorithm
  • filter parameters are now persistant
  • Added scripting interface to parameters of all filters
  • Added scripting command to apply filters via scripting
  • Added "recent sizes" popup in Create New Canvas dialog (saved across restarts)
  • Preliminary Wacom Intuos support in the included Tablet Driver
  • Added De-Interlace add-on
  • Improved WinGrab add-on
  • Various other bug fixes and improvements

Did anyone try running Becasso on Haiku..? I'd be interested to know whether it still works.

By the way, did ArtPaint steal my icon?

By the way: the old Sum Software website is archived here: http://www.stoks.nl/sumware/ (includes documentation and FAQs).

I should probably dig up a machine which still runs BeOS, remove the Keyfile check from the code and release a free version...

If that's your icon, I can remove it from ArtPaint.

that'd be nice!

It does work on Haiku. Brief testing, tips don't work, the binary doesn't link to the menu correctly, layers don't seem to work. See the new screenshot.

Don't bother about the icon... the ArtPaint one looks like a cleaned-up version of mine, which was very generic to begin with.

Great to see you looking in!
I just tried Becasso in a fairly recent Haiku gcc4hybrid build. There are some issues with Becasso...
When I first executed the pkg it installed OK. Later, when I tried again, strangely enough, the PackageInstaller crashed.
That aside, opening a fle via drag&drop works, using the open dialog crashes when changing directories.

Also, do not install the bundled Translators!
I did and Tracker crashed on bootup.

I always liked Becasso because of it's unique idea of using its painting tools to create selections. Though I haven't really worked with Becasso, WonderBrush is more in my alley. :)

Hey, will we see more of you in the future, Sander, or are you only quickly checking in after googling "Becasso"? :P

Regards,
Humdinger

Not after googling - it was an article on OSNews which sent me this way. I honestly don't think I'll have time to debug this stuff. Most likely, when I look at the code I'll decide a total rewrite is warranted :-)

Since you've got WonderBrush anyway, I don't think there's much use for Becasso...

Oh man, BeCasso is a fantastic app! Please do a port to Haiku. Or if you don't have the time, consider open sourcing it and we can have a try. It really deserves to live on after BeOS. I haven't tested it previously because it was only a demo and the commercial version was no longer available. Otherwise it would have gone into the Haiku apps article.

I followed the advice not to add the Translators, and now, when I try to view a jpg, I get the message "Could not load image! Either the file or an image translator for it does not exist." I'm running Alpha 3.

That is to be expected. The translators are what you use to load and save images, such as jpg's.

Would it be worthwhile for me to try and locate the source code? I would be willing to donate it so a volunteer can get it to work better under Haiku (although I cannot vouch for its state, and I cannot offer any help in its maintenance). Who would be interested..?

Please do, if you can find the source there are likely to be voulenteers to maintain it.

@sanderstoks: It would be enormously appreciated if you opensourced the code. I have no C++ skills myself, but if you put it up, //someone// will pick it up. In fact, let me be greedy and ask if the source for Surgeon is still floating around on a hard disk somewhere?

+1 # RE: Becassosanderstoks 2011-11-24 04:04
The Surgeon code would be on the same disk. I know where the disk is (I salvaged it from my old computer) but I'm not sure I have a system which can still mount it...

Quoting sanderstoks:

If your so inclined, chuck the disc in the mail to someone who can retrive the data. .

I shouldld have been more clear- after installing Becasso, and not installing the Becasso translators, I can't view images with Showimage.

Hi gaukler!

Becasso is lying. :)
Or, to be more acurate, I don't have the option not to include the Translators when installing. It just asks about links to libraries.
Those are put into ~/config/libs/ and also into /boot/home... (?)
You can delete those, I'd say. Also, Becasso installs Translators in ~/config/add-ons/Translators. Once you delete those as well (even the BecassoTranslator as that will also crash e.g. ShowImage), everything will work again.

@Sander: Nice you're visiting here. :)

Regards,
Humdinger

0 # RE: Becassogaukler 2011-11-25 12:04
Thanks, Humdinger. I did a search for translators, and deleted everything that Becasso installed. I can view jpgs again.
I need an image editor, and Refraction doesn't work in Haiku.

I find WonderBrush does a nice job ("installoptionalpackage WonderBrush" in Terminal). Though it's a bit weak on the filter side and retouching photos...

I need to adjust photos for colour balance, contrast, etc. Refraction does the job in Zeta.
