Description:

Caution:
This application is compiled on r42930, but it should work on Alpha 3 too since i tested it on A2 and it worked.

Changes:

  • Scrolling with keyboard
With the arrow key now small steps are scrolled. If you want bigger steps like it was before, you must hold "shift" pressed while pressing the arrow keys. Or you can press PageUp/PageDown.
  • Scrolling with Mousewheel
You can now use your mousewheel for scrolling. It works also with the mousepad, i.e. moving your finger up and down on the right side of mousepad
  • Fit Page
Now if you choose for example "fit width" the page will continue to fit to the width even after/while you do a resizing.
  • Zooming
Additional to zooming with the icons, you can now zoom in/out by holding the control key pressed and pressing on the arrow-keys.
  • Preview

You can preview the pages of your document on the left sidebar. You can choose if the "previewed" pages fit to the width of the sidebar, or if they should have a fix width, that means you can have  multiple  columns in the preview.
  • Jumping to page
If you want your document to jump to a certain page of your preview, you have to do a double click on the page in the preview.
  • User Interface
The ribbon-like toolbar is was moved to the top of your document. That means, you can now access the icos faster. If you want to hide it, you just grabe the splitter and pull it to the top.

Questions:

  • How do you comment the change to the user interface? Does it now feel better than in previous version?
  • The user interface is a little different to a traditional haiku/beos application. Do you think it's acceptable, or is the difference for you inacceptable and do you prefer a more traditional look?

Remarks:

  • The controversal circle-menu i didnt include yet, because it is not yet ready for testing.
  • The Preview View is sometimes a little too slow, i will improve it later.
  • Change of name: I change again the name (because of an hint of axeld)
  • I'm very sorry, that i could not hold my intention to make a new release every 1-2 weeks. Sadly i had less time for coding than i hoped before. I hope that till beginning of january this documentviewer will have most of the functionality of BePDF
  • I think some of the pdf-editing functionality i will start to add somewhere in february/march.
  • Many thank to the ones who contributed with ideas/code especially stippi.
  • And many thanks to the ones who made donations, it is a nice surpice to see people donating for a pdfviewer.

Works very well. Best pdf rendering of anything I've used on Haiku.

I responded to many of your questions on your mail list posting.

yes, most of your ideas i can understand, just the need of a Menu I dont understand at the moment. I really dont see the need of a menu, since with the ribbon you can access everything in 1 or 2 clicks. Using a menu, you would need at least 2 clicks if not more, depending if the menu has also sub-menues.

I agree with what Disreali wrote on the mailing list. I prefer the "traditional" Haiku look&feel. A menu bar is a very space conserving method to logically group every feature/command of an app and, most important, show the associated shortcut. "Power-users" soon learn the shortcut of their most-used commands and only occasionally have to consult the menu for seldom used stuff.
Nice update in any case. Keep up the good work!

Humdinger

Dude, what a awesome upgrade !!!. Making the left page ui and the ribbon bar hideable with a check box or prefrence or some easily found and discorverable method would make a few happy apparently.

but does it print ?

Great job man, really !!

the list of things I would change

Make the icons that control the ribbon a bit bigger, make the ribbon icons a bit smaller

Put the ui sizing button in the traditional location for a BeOS tab "for system consistency"

those are the 2 big ones.

It doesnt print yet. At the moment I didnt put it on my priority list, because I dont use to print pdf's, so if I dont forget perhaps in the next version it will print too.

An option for auto-hiding the ribbon is perhaps a good idea.

Cipri did not listen to solely advice developers on traditional Haiku look & feel and context menu. Developers do not listen to users who wish to modern Haiku gcc4h - adherence to the fallen corpse gcc2 and patching system that somehow it all worked, ehh nevermind.
Cipri alongside the standard text menu, as most would like to see an original approach to the topic in the circle-menu. We can not afford to impose the Haiku developers, should look like each application. We need offering fresh approach to application design, see that: http://www.birdhouse.org/beos/byte/12-digital_video/

I made the ribbon now a little smaller, and moved a few icons around. If you like it now better than before, you can download it again.

Nice update, still the top icons that acess the ribbon are a bit to small. Also, they don't obvious enough to me just yet. Nice touch up works though.

You know what would be nice above the ribbon/controls icons. some text with the icons boxed. sort of a visual/written cue. doesn't need to be overly complex but the top icons are a bit mystery meat in regards to navgivation which goes against good UI principals.

Yes, perhaps indeed a little too small, but it also depends on the screen resolution you use.
I wanted to make the buttons in "real size" that doesnt depend uppon screen resolution, but at least the monitor of my laptop doesnt support option, perhaps it's too old.
After I have a new laptop, and I can test these feature, I will give the user the posibility to choose to use "real size buttons", which keep the same size independet of the resolution of the screen.

Nice app.

Get rid of the ribbon and give me a normal Haiku style menu and I will be happy!

Yes, in future you will be able to replace the ribbon with a tranditional menu. You will just have to run Documenterviewer from the terminal with the command: DocumentViewer -ILikeItOld
:-)

No no no cipri, we want ribbon and standard menu. Cipri dont rid ribbon menu. Please.

0 # RE: DocumentViewerbbjimmy 2012-01-11 23:10
I don't like ribbon interfaces in Windows and I certanly do not want to deal with them in haiku. Please, please get rid of the ribbon and give us a clean un-cluttered interface.

0 # RE: DocumentViewerMaxOS 2012-01-12 01:51
Ribbon, ribbon. We want ribbon.
bbjimmy: you use standard menu. People leave in peace ribbon, ok. Not impose any other boring standard.
